From the Earth to the Moon

by Jules Verne

A gun club with nothing left to shoot at decides, with straight-faced enthusiasm, to build a cannon and fire themselves at the moon instead. Verne worked out the mathematics of the launch with startling accuracy for a century that had not yet built a rocket. He got the destination almost exactly right and the method almost entirely wrong, which is a fair trade for 1865.
