The Moon Hoax

by Richard Adams Locke

In the late summer of 1835 the New York Sun reported that Sir John Herschel’s great telescope had found forests, beasts like bison and winged ‘man-bats’ living on the Moon. Every word was invented, and the paper sold a great many copies. Read it as a magnificent piece of mischief, then go and look at the library’s own Moon.
