Satire

The Female Quixote

by Charlotte Lennox

Charlotte Lennox’s Arabella has read so many French romances that she takes a gardener for a nobleman in disguise and a stranger for a ravisher. It came out in 1752, and in 1807 Austen wrote that it now made the family’s evening amusement, and was quite equal to what she remembered. Catherine Morland, in Northanger Abbey, is Arabella’s younger sister.
