The Library After Dark

Satire

Castle Rackrent

by Maria Edgeworth

Thady Quirk, the family’s faithful steward, tells how four generations of the Rackrents drank, gambled and sued their way through their estate. Maria Edgeworth published it in 1800, and it is often called the first regional novel in English. Walter Scott said it made him want to do the same for Scotland.
