The Library After Dark

Speculative

Across the Zodiac

by Percy Greg

A traveller builds a ship driven by “apergy”, a force that pushes against gravity, and flies to Mars, where he finds an orderly, rather joyless society and a great deal of bureaucracy. Percy Greg’s novel of 1880 is one of the first stories of a voyage to Mars. His ship was called the Astronaut, perhaps the first use of the word.
