The Library After Dark

Mystery

The Circular Staircase

by Mary Roberts Rinehart

A sensible spinster rents a country house for the summer, and on the first weekend a man is shot dead at the foot of its spiral staircase. Rinehart’s heroine keeps wondering what she might have prevented, which gave rise to the “had I but known” school of mysteries. There is a hidden room, of course; this shelf would not have it otherwise.
