The Getting of Wisdom

by Henry Handel Richardson

Laura Rambotham, a clever and awkward girl from the country, is sent to a ladies’ college in Melbourne and learns, painfully, how to fit in. Henry Handel Richardson was the pen-name of Ethel Florence Lindesay Richardson, who drew on her own schooldays at the Presbyterian Ladies’ College. Published in 1910, it is as sharp about snobbery and small lies as any school story ever written.
