The Complete Poetical Works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge

by Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Ernest Hartley Coleridge, the poet’s grandson, edited this complete edition of the poems in 1912, with the drafts and fragments. Among them is Constancy to an Ideal Object, which ends with a woodman going up a glen at dawn who sees a figure in the snow-mist with a glory round its head, and worships it, not knowing it is his own shadow. Coleridge had climbed the Brocken in the Harz Mountains, where such shadows are seen, in 1799.
