Meditations

by Marcus Aurelius

Private notes a Roman emperor wrote to himself, never intended for anyone else’s eyes, on how to remain steady while commanding an empire that was actively falling apart around him. There is no audience being performed for in it, which is precisely why it has outlasted books written for far larger ones. I recommend it especially to visitors who arrive here overwhelmed.
