The Care of Books

by John Willis Clark

A scholarly history of how books were physically stored, chained, and organised across medieval and early libraries, long before anything resembling a modern shelf existed. Clark was a librarian himself, cataloguing the profession’s own distant ancestors. It is drier than most of this catalogue and prouder of that fact than it should be.
