The Phantom of the Opera

by Gaston Leroux

A disfigured composer haunts the cellars beneath an opera house and falls obsessively for a young singer he has coached in secret. Leroux built a genuine mystery under the gothic romance, complete with a very literal trapdoor or two. The mask, notably, covers considerably less of the tragedy than readers usually assume.
