The Open Door, and the Portrait

by Margaret Oliphant

A house’s ordinary front door is discovered to open, on rare occasions, onto somewhere considerably less ordinary, and a family must decide what to do about a door they cannot control. Oliphant wrote ghost stories that trade in grief and longing more than in fright. The haunting here is gentler than most, and sadder for it.
