The Monk

by M. G. Lewis

A supposedly virtuous monk is undone, spectacularly and at length, by exactly the temptations he was most confident he had already conquered. Lewis wrote it at twenty, apparently to shock, and it shocked considerably more than he perhaps expected. I keep it a discreet distance from the more devotional volumes, out of respect for both.
