Bronson Alcott’s Fruitlands

by Clara Endicott Sears

The story of the farm at Harvard, Massachusetts, where in 1843 Bronson Alcott and a handful of idealists tried to live on fruit and grain, using no animals and no cotton, and gave up in the winter. Clara Endicott Sears gathered its letters and diaries in 1915, after buying the farmhouse and making it a museum. She added Transcendental Wild Oats, Louisa May Alcott’s comic account of it all, written long after by the girl who was ten when it happened.
