The Library After Dark

Drama

The Gentle Shepherd

by Allan Ramsay

Allan Ramsay, a wigmaker who became an Edinburgh bookseller, wrote this pastoral comedy in Scots in 1725, and it was acted, reprinted and loved all over Scotland for a hundred years. Ramsay is said to have opened the first circulating library in Britain, in 1725 or 1726. Burns counted him and Robert Fergusson as his masters in Scots verse.
