Romance

Sintram and His Companions

by Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué

A German romance of 1815, written to go with Albrecht Dürer’s engraving Knight, Death and the Devil: Sintram, a young Norse knight haunted by terrible dreams, rides out with Death and the Devil beside him. Fouqué’s Undine had come out four years before, and in English the two were often published together. Jo March longs for them in the first chapter of Little Women.
