The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner
Read it in the Library After Dark Or read it as plain textJames Hogg, the Ettrick Shepherd, had hardly any schooling and spent most of his young life herding sheep. He liked to say he was born on Burns’s birthday, which his parish register does not bear out. His novel of 1824, about a young man sure that he is one of the elect and befriended by a stranger who may be the Devil, is one of the strangest and best of its century.
