The Adventures of Hajji Baba of Ispahan

by James Morier

James Morier spent years in Persia as a British diplomat, and in 1824 turned what he saw into the picaresque life of a barber’s son of Isfahan who is in turn a captive of Turcoman raiders, a doctor’s servant, an officer of the chief executioner and a diplomat. A Persian translation by Mirza Habib Isfahani, published in 1905, is admired in Iran as a classic of Persian prose. Hajji Baba has every gift but honesty.
