Extraordinary Voyages

Survivors of the Chancellor

by Jules Verne

Told as a passenger’s diary, the ship Chancellor catches fire, runs aground and finally drifts as a raft with dwindling food. It is one of Verne’s bleakest books, closer to the real wreck of the Medusa than to his usual optimism. This is another English translation; the library keeps each one, because translators disagree in interesting ways.
