The Pilgrim’s Progress

by John Bunyan

Christian leaves the City of Destruction with a burden on his back and walks through the Slough of Despond, Vanity Fair and the Valley of the Shadow of Death towards the Celestial City. Bunyan, a tinker and preacher, began it in Bedford gaol, and it was published in 1678. For two hundred years it stood in nearly every English home that had books at all.
