The Enemies of Books

by William Blades

A short, indignant history of everything that has ever destroyed a book, fire, damp, careless owners, worse librarians, written by a man who clearly considered each loss a small personal grief. Blades catalogues the enemies with the specific fury of someone who has personally mourned a damaged first edition. I find him, of everyone on this particular shelf, the most kindred spirit.
